Battalion Chief
Martin Coyne

.

"For a Firefighter it is normal. You are used to it. Like I said, I never thought I was in danger. I never thought the building would come down on us, not those buildings; a frame building maybe. But it is very seldom that an occupied building goes down. Unless it was burning for at least 5 hours, then it might come down.  But this was a very hot fire with the jet fuel and all."

"What also happened was that there was so much debris in the street that you would be standing there and the next thing you knew, you would be standing in a fire on the paper that ignited on the street. Then 124 Truck, I remember, they had to get hand lines because all the paper from the office was on fire around the truck. Then they shut those lines and everybody had to pull back. That was around noon."

This is a little bit of the story of what happened to the Chief and his Assistant on September 11, 2001. The full story will appear in our book.
