Staten Island Origami Style 911
Memorial on St. George Waterfront
Staten Island dedicated its Wings 911 Memorial designed by Masayuki Sono of
Kobe, Japan, in 2004 on the St. George Waterfront. It comprises two 40-foot
postcards, stretching out like wings to the heavens. Plaques honoring 252 of the
271 borough residents and former Islanders killed in the attacks and in the 1993
World Trade Center bombing line the inner sides of the structures. Each plaque,
accompanied by a granite facial profile, includes the victim’s name, occupation
and date of birth. There are 294 panels in all. The empty panels will be filled
as more families give their consent to memorializing their loved ones, or as
other Staten Island victims are identified in the future. The memorial cost $2
Million.
